# Deliver digital products securely

> Use Protected Content to give buyers OTP-protected access to videos, files, text or a link after they pay.

Protected Content keeps your digital product inside BCL and only opens it for customers who paid. Buyers confirm a one-time code (OTP) before they can view it, so a shared link is no use to anyone else. It avoids emails that never arrive. It also removes the risk that WhatsApp bans your number for bulk messages.

Protected Content is an add-on. Without it, you can still [send a download link by email](/sell-digital-products/).

## Create the protected content

Have your video link, file, text or destination URL ready. Then:

1. In the sidebar, click **Protected Content**, then **New Content**.

2. Fill in **Title** and, if you want, **Description**.
3. On the **Content Settings** tab, choose a **Content Type**:

   | Content Type | What it is | Good for |
   | --- | --- | --- |
   | **Video** | A YouTube, Vimeo or Facebook link, or an embed code | Classes and webinars |
   | **Text** | Text you type in the **Content** box | Instructions, a password or a private group link |
   | **File** | Files you upload, up to 10 files of 5MB each | Ebooks, templates or ZIP files |
   | **Redirect URL** | A link the buyer is sent to | A course or member site elsewhere |

*(Screenshot: The Content Settings tab with the Content Type field highlighted)*

4. Under **Access Control**, choose an **Access Type**:

   | Access Type | When customers can open it |
   | --- | --- |
   | **Immediate Access** | Straight after the payment, with no end date |
   | **Scheduled Access** | From the **Start Date & Time** you set, until the **End Date & Time** (leave it empty for lifetime access) |
   | **Duration-based Access** | For the **Access Duration (Days)** you set, counted from the purchase date |

5. Set **Maximum Devices** (0 means unlimited) and, for files, **Maximum Downloads**.
6. Turn on **Show on Receipt** so the buyer sees an access button after the payment.

7. Click **Create Protected Content**.

## Link it to a product

BCL gives access when someone buys an item that the content is linked to. This works on payment form items (**Multiple Items**) and event tickets.

1. Open the payment form, go to the **Payment Details** tab and click **More** on the item. A small **P** on the button means content is already linked.

2. Under **Digital Content**, choose one or more pieces of content in **Protected Content**.

3. Click **Update Item Information**, then **Update Form**.

## What the buyer sees

After the payment, the buyer sees a **Your Content is Ready!** pop-up and a **View Protected Content** button on the receipt.

BCL also emails the buyer a **Your Protected Content is Now Available** message. The email has an **Access Content** button for each piece of content, so the buyer can come back to it later.

To open the content, the buyer:

1. Chooses where to receive the code: **Email**, **SMS** or **WhatsApp**, and taps **Send Verification Code**.

*(Screenshot: The Verify Your Access page with the Email option highlighted)*

2. Types the 6-digit code into **Enter Verification Code**. The page checks the code immediately after the buyer types the sixth digit. So the buyer usually does not need to tap **Verify & Access Content**. The code expires in 10 minutes.

*(Screenshot: The Check Your Email page with the code box highlighted)*

3. Sees the content, with their access period, view count and device limit at the bottom.

*(Screenshot: A protected text guide open on its content page)*

If every device slot is in use, the buyer sees **Device Limit Reached** instead. If the buyer taps **Switch to This Device**, BCL signs out their oldest device and opens the content here.

To check the page yourself, open the content in **Protected Content** and click **Preview**.

## Rename the receipt button

The button says **View Protected Content** unless you change it. To rename it, open the form's **Advanced** page and stay on the **Form Display** tab. Fill in **Protected Content Button Label** under **Other Labels**. Then click **Save Advanced Settings**.

## Common issues

### My customer paid but cannot open the content. What do I check?

Open the content in Protected Content and look at Customer Access. If the buyer is not listed, you probably did not link the content to the item they bought. Check the Protected Content field under More on that item.

### I linked content to an old product. How do earlier buyers get access?

BCL only creates access when someone buys. Open the content's Customer Access page, open Actions and click Grant Buyer Access to give past buyers access at one time.

### My customer says the device limit is full, but they only use one phone.

Maximum Devices counts devices at the same time, and a different browser counts as a new device. On the Device Limit Reached page they can tap Switch to This Device to sign out their oldest device. You can also free a slot from Customer Access with the Sessions action on that customer.
